West Tripura on the way to Total Sanitation

West Tripura district is on its way to full coverage under Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) within the calendar year of 2004. In the first phase, the DWSM placed more emphasis on the IEC activities for awareness generation about basic hygiene, cleanliness and use of pucca toilets – and the HRD activites, like training of masons in the design of squatting plates etc. With these activities taking the center stage in the TSC programme for a period of almost three months, the production and distribution of squatting plates started in right earnest in the month of October, 2003.

The district has already covered more than five villages (Gram Panchayats) in full by this time. Four of the blocks in West Tripura aree expected to be fully covered by April 2004; and nother three blocks by July 2004 and the entire district by December 2004. It is the endeavour of the DWSM to cover all shools, Anganwadi centers and all individual households before this period, which will be no mean an achievement considering the size of the district and its population of over 16 lakhs.
